Pat Metheny Group - American Garage (1979)
한때 엄청~ 무진장~ 아주 많이 좋아했던 퓨전 재즈 기타리스트 팻 매시니(Pat Metheny)가 만든 Pat Metheny Group (줄여서 PMG라고 합니다)의 앨범을 소개하고자 합니다.
우선, Pat Metheny는 1954년생으로 올해 68세가 되셨습니다. 어느새 칠순을 바라보는 연세가 되셨네요 ^^; PMG로도 활동하고, 솔로로도 활동하고 여러 뮤지션들과 협업을 하기도 하며 많은 앨범을 발매하며 왕성한 활동을 펼치신 분입니다. 그는 무려 20개의 그래미상을 수상하였는데, 10개 부문에서 그래미상을 수상한 유일한 사람이라고 합니다. 플루겔혼을 연주하는 Mike Metheny가 친형이라고 하며, 동생인 Pat Metheny의 1992년도 앨범 "Secret Story"의 9번째 트랙인 'See the world'에서 플루겔혼을 연주하기도 했습니다.
암튼, Pat Metheny는 1976년에 Jaco Pastorius(베이스)와 Bob Moses(드럼)와 함께 1집 "Bright Size Life"를, 1977년에는 Lyle Mays(피아노), Eberhard Weber(베이스), Danny Gottlieb(드럼)과 함께 2집 앨범 "Watercolors"를 발표합니다.
1977년에 Pat Metheny는 그의 2집 앨범에서 함께 했던 Lyle Mays(피아노), Danny Gottlieb(드럼)에 베이스 주자인 Mark Egan(베이스)을 합류시켜 Pat Metheny Group (PMG)를 만듭니다. Pat Metheny Group의 1기 라인업으로 1980년까지 유지되었습니다. 이후 베이스를 맡은 Mark Egan이 Steve Rodby로 교체되었고, Steve Rodby는 2010년까지 계속 멤버로 활동하였습니다. Dan Gottlieb 또한 1982년까지 활동하다가 Paul Wertico로 교체되어 2001년까지 활동했으며, 이후 다시 Antonio Sánchez로 교체되어 2010년까지 활동했습니다.
PMG (Pat Metheny Group)의 초창기 멤버로 피아노, 신디사이저를 담당했던 Pat Metheny의 영혼의 동반자인 라일 메이즈(Lyle Mays)는 2010년까지 활동했으며, 66세의 나이로 2020년 2월 10일 오랜 투병끝에 사망했습니다. 그는 솔로 앨범도 몇장 내었으며. Pat Metheny와 함께 작업한 앨범이 가장 많았지만, Joni Mitchell, Eberhard Weber, Bobby McFerrin, Toots Thielemans 등의 앨범에 참여하기도 했습니다.
이들의 첫번째 앨범인 "Pat Metheny Group"은 1978년에 발매되었고, 오늘 소개하는 앨범 "American Garage"는 1979년에 발매된 Pat Metheny Group의 두 번째 앨범입니다. 메사추세츠주의 우스터 카운티(Worcester County)에 있는 노스 브룩필드(North Brookfield) 타운에 위치한 Long View Farm 스튜디오에서 녹음하였다고 합니다.

이 앨범에는 A면에 3곡, B면에 2곡 수록되어 있습니다. 모든 곡은 Pat Metheny와 Lyle Mays가 공동으로 만들었습니다. Pat Metheny는 이 앨범에서 두번째 트랙인 Airstream을 좋아한다고 했습니다. 하지만, Pat Metheny와 Lyle Mays는 B면 두번째 곡인 13분짜리 대곡인 The Epic에 대해서는 칭찬을 덜 표현했다고 합니다.
개인적으론 CD와 LP의 첫번째로 들어있어 너무나 익숙한 경쾌한 (Cross the) Heartland를 좋아합니다. 물론, 비교적 차분한 분위기의 A면 두번째 곡 Airstream도 좋고, 세번째 곡인 The Search도 Pat Metheny의 기타 연주와 Lyle Mays의 피아노 사운드가 잘 어울립니다.
타이틀 곡인 B면 첫번째 곡 American Garage는 좀 방방 뛰는 뽕짝 같은 분위기라 그닥 좋아하지는 않습니다. 13분짜리 대곡 마지막 트랙 The Epic은 변화무쌍한 곡의 전개 시도는 좋았지만, 제목처럼 멋진 대서사시를 펼치기엔 조금 부족한 느낌입니다.

이 앨범은 1980년에 빌보드 재즈 앨범 차트 1위까지 올랐고, 팝 앨범 차트에서도 53위까지 오르며 대중적인 인기도 얻었습니다.
PMG는 2005년에 마지막 스튜디오 앨범인 "The Way Up"을 발표하였고, "Songbook Tour"이라는 타이틀로 2010년 여름에 유럽의 재즈 페스티벌을 돌아다니며 공연을 하며 마무리를 합니다.
